2002 Business Hall of Fame Laureate

Alex Schoenbaum (8/ 8/15 - 12/ 6/96)

Mr. Schoenbaum opened his first restaurant in Charleston, West Virginia, in 1947, the forerunner of Shoney’s, of which he was the founder. There are now over 1800 restaurants in 36 states.

Born in Richmond, Virginia and raised in Huntington, West Virginia, Mr. Schoenbaum was an All-American football player in 1938 at Ohio State University where he graduated. In 1990, he received the Distinguished Service Award from Ohio State University; he also served on O.S.U.’s Foundation Board, established a scholarship program, and contributed generously to the Woody Hayes Athletic Facility. The new Undergraduate School of Business building will be named in his honor.

Mr. Schoenbaum was famous for his philanthropy. He focused giving in the areas of education, human needs and religious institutions.

His contributions and gifts could fill volumes. A few of these include:

  • Raising $31 million dollars for the Salvation Army’s Southeast Region
  • Serving on the Board of Directors for Junior Achievement of Kanawha Valley for 15 years
  • Mr. Schoenmaum supported the Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation with $500,000, the Charleston YMCA with a new gym, and West Virginia University with $500,000 in scholarships.
  • The Schoenbaum Family Enrichment Center opened on February 14, 2002 offering services to children and families. Two children’s religious schools were named for Mr. Schoenbaum at Temple Beth Sholom in Sarasota, Florida and B’nai Jacob Synagogue in Charleston.

Alex Schoenbaum’s honors include being the Recipient of Tribute appearing in Congressional Record by US Senator John d. Rockefeller IV, Most Loyal Mountaineer Award, Co-founder and member of Alexis de Toque Ville Society, and establishing the Schoenbaum Medical Research Fellowship at the City of Hope National Medical Center in California. Betty Jane and Alex shared 56 years of Marriage and the children are Raymond, Jeffry, Joann, and Emily.
