I.N. "Ike" Smith, Jr.

Isaac Noyes Smith, Jr. joined Kanawha Banking & Trust company in 1960. In 1982, he was named President & Chief Executive Officer of Kanawha Banking & Trust Company and Intermountain Bankshares, Inc. In 1986, Kanawha Banking & Trust Company merged into United Bankshares, Inc. and become an office of United National Bank. At that time, Mr. Smith held the positions of President of the holding company and President of the bank. Mr. Smith also held the position of Chairman of United Bank. He also managed four family land companies: Kanawha City Company, West Virginia Coal land Company, Kanawha Company, and Roxalana Land company, the operation of which caused him to be named in The State Journal’s 1997 Who’s Who in WV Business. These four companies merged to form a new company, Kanawha-Roxalana Company, of which Mr. Smith is President and CEO.

Mr. Smith has served in a variety of public and business positions. Some of these include:

  • District Governor for Rotary International District 7550.
  • Treasurer of the Faulty Merit Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to recognizing outstanding university and college educators in WV.
  • Board member of the Charleston Renaissance Corporation, the Business & Industrial Development Council, and the WV Humanities Council.
  • Board member and Vice Chairman of the Charleston Urban Renewal Authority.
  • Member of the American Bankers Association, Omicron Delta Kappa, Phi Delta Phi, Phi Delta Theta and the WV Bar Association.
  • Former board member of the WV Roundtable, Goodwill Industries, The Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Fund for the Arts, and the Salvation Army.
  • Former Chairman of the Charleston Chamber of Commerce.
  • Former Treasurer of the Governor’s Tasks Force in 1986

Mr. Smith has been honored for his fundraising efforts by the YMCA (1990 Spirit of the Valley Award) and City of Hope (1995 “Spirit of Life” award). The Charleston Renaissance Corporation presented him with their “Volunteer of the Year Award” for the year 2000. He served as Co-Chairman of the 1995 Capital Campaign for Washington & lee University, and was successful in helping them to exceed their area goal of $1 million. He served as a respresentative of the Washington Society and Liberty Hall Foundation on the Washington & Lee 250the Observance Commission in celebration of the 250th anniversary.

Born on June 20, 1932 in Charleston, WV, Mr. Smith graduated from Washington & Lee University with a B.A. degree in 1957. He continued his education at Washington & Lee Law School, earning and L.L.B. in 1960. Active in student government, Mr. Smith served as Vice President of the Student Body as well as Vice President of the Law Class. He also served as Captain the football team and was listed in Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities.

Mr. Smith and his wife, Stuart, live in Charleston, WV. They have three sons, Quintie, Botts, and Lyle and one daughter, Lisa, and six grandchildren.
