2003 Business Hall of Fame
James R. Thomas, II
James R. Thomas, II was the President and CEO of Carbon Industries. He served as a distinguished member of the Board of Directors of One Valley Bank, NA Columbia Energy, Inc. and Shoney’s, Inc.
Mr. Thomas graduated from Cornell University, AB 1950, after serving our country in the 13th & 82nd Airborne Divisions of the U.S. Army from 1944-1946. He has always been very active in giving back to the community and served in the following ways:
- Board of Directors for the Clay Center for Arts and Sciences
- Chairman of United Way of Central West Virginia
- Executive Board of the Buckskin council, Boy Scouts of America
- WV Commission for National and Community Service
- WV Roundtable
- Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse
- Kanawha County Master Gardener
- Board of Trustees, University of Charleston
In recognition of his outstanding community service, Mr. Thomas has received many awards and honors, including:
- Silver Beaver and Good Scout Awards, Buckskin Council, BSA
- Gold, Silver & Bronze Leadership Awards, Junior Achievement
- Medal for Service, U.S. Treasury Department
- Spirit of the Valley Award, YMCA
- Honorary Doctorate of Laws Degree, WV Wesleyan College
- Rhododendron Award, WV Wesleyan College
- Honorary Doctorate of Laws Degree, University of Charleston
- Hall of Fame, Lewis College of Business, Marshall University
- WV Coal Hall of Fame
- Most Loyal Mountaineer, WV University Student Foundation
Mr. Thomas’ previous community service included involvement with the WV coal Association, Junior Achievement, of which he was a founder, Rotary International, where he served as the District Governor for District 7550, Fund for the Arts, WV Foundation for Independent Colleges, WV Wesleyan College, Buckskin Council, Boy Scouts of America, Camcare, Inc. and the Charleston Renaissance Corporation.
Mr. Thomas was married to the late Clara C. Thomas, have two sons, James R. Thomas, III and Robert C. Thomas, and seven grandchildren.
