2005 Business Hall of Fame Laureate
John L. McClaugherty
A native of Princeton, West Virginia, John L. McClaugherty served as the Managing Member & CEO of Jackson Kelly PLLC from 1985 to 2002. Prior to his untimely passing in 2003, he continued his fill time practice of law in the areas of Appellate Litigation, Legislative Drafting, Natural Resources, and Workers’ compensation Defense. Mr. McClaugherty also served as the Chairman of the Board for Jackson & Kelly Solutions LLC. A graduate of Northwestern University (B.S., 1953) and the West Virginia University College of Law (L.L.B., 1956), he received an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from West Virginia University in 1999.
Noted for his fund raising ability, Mr. McClaugherty was driving force behind the development of the Clay Center for the Arts and Sciences – West Virginia. He served for more than twenty-five years as Commissioner of the National conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws, and in 1999 was the first West Virginian every elected president of the Conference. Mr. McClaugherty was involved with numerous professional and civic organizations and has been honored by a long list of organizations for his dedication and service to the legal and philanthropic communities. In 1999, the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth circuit honored him with the prestigious Professionalism Award, which was soon followed by the Justitia Officium Award presented by the West Virginia University College of Law, which is the highest honor bestowed upon its recipients.
