2004 Business Hall of Fame Laureate
Thomas D. Wilkerson
Mr. Wilkerson graduated from Fork Union Military Academy, Fork Union, VA at the age of 16. He attended the University of Virginia and received his B.S. degree from Marshall University. He is a graduate of Washington and Lee University School of Law. Mr. Wilkerson practiced law in Kanawha County for two years and also served as Executive Assistant and Legal Counsel to the Public Service Commission of West Virginia
In 1960, Mr. Wilkerson joined the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company in the capacity of director of Research and Analysis for the West Virginia Agency. He was appointed Assistant General Agent in 1963, and on February 1, 1972, became the General Agent. He held this position until April 30, 1994. Long active in business, civic and professional communities, Mr. Wilkerson has served as President or Chairman of the following organizations:
- The United Way of Kanawha Valley
- Goodwill of the Kanawha Valley
- Greater Charleston Chamber of commerce and Development
- The Salvation Army Board
- The University of Charleston, Board of Trustees
- Thomas Memorial Hospital, Board of Trustees
- Charleston Chartered Life Underwriters
- Charleston General Agents and Managers Association
- Estate Planning Council of Charleston
Mr. Wilkerson was a Chartered Member of Junior Achievement.
He was a member of the Board of Governors of Marshall University, after servicing as Chairman of the Marshall University Board of Advisors. In addition, Mr. Wilkerson was a member of the Board of Trustees of Fork Union Military Academy and also served as a member of the Children’s Health Insurance Program for West Virginia (CHIPS)
During his time as General Agent for Northwestern Mutual, Mr. Wilkerson qualified for the National Management Award each year for twenty-two years. He was on of only thirty-five General Agents or Managers in the entire insurance industry to do so.
Mr. Wilkerson was married to the former Sandra Snyder. The Wilkerson’s have three children and four grandchildren.
