The competition consists of three phases:
  • Phase one is a written test consisting of 50 multiple choice questions which is administered during class time by a Junior Achievement staff person. Those scoring a minimum of 86% will proceed to phase two. (Total possible score - 100 points)
  • Phase two is an essay test. The score is based upon 60% content (does it cover the subject), 20% style, and 20% grammar, punctuation, etc.
  • Phase three is an interview by representatives of the scholarship funds.

The scholarship funds are offered by West Virginia-American Water Company, The McJunkin Family Foundation, and the Stephen Miller Memorial Fund. Representatives of the funds interview the finalists and decide each year how many awards to give and how much each award will be. The representatives usually give three to four awards. The awards vary in amount from $400 to $1,000 depending upon how well the students do in the interview portion. The awards are presented to the students once they choose the school they will be attending.
